Gunner Lee Thornton, age 22. Died: Iraq, 2006.
He wrote to his fiancée, Helen: ‘I don’t know why I am writing this because I really hope that this letter never gets to you, because if it does that means I am dead.
‘Just because I have passed away does not mean I am not with you.
‘I’ll always be there looking over you, keeping you safe.
‘So whenever you feel lonely, just close your eyes and I’ll be there right by your side. I really did love you with all I had, you were everything to me.’

"Your granddaddy, though, he was a stubborn man and he was smart, like you. He learned to fly and he got his affairs in order and he kissed your grandmother goodbye. She said it was the best kiss the man ever laid on her. She said, in that one moment, between their lips and the softness of their tongues, she knew love—she knew love was cruel because she also understood, in her blood and bones, she would only have that one moment to hold onto."

It makes me sad.

It makes me sad.

It makes me so sad.

Our neighbors had the second boy after trying again and again resulting in 7 girls.

It makes me sad.

It makes me so sad.

They are so happy with their new son that they booked a court with 3 restaurants to celebrate his birth, while with their daughter (born last year) they didn’t even make a party in their home.

It makes me sad.

It makes me so sad.

That although they have the cutest, most beautiful young girls I’ve seen, everyone on campus knows those girls were given birth to a crying mother cursing her damned luck.

It makes me so terribly sad.

"

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.

"

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

Dachau Concentration Camp after being liberated by Allied forces.
Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp erected in Germany, built in 1933. Its purpose, unlike extermination camps such as Treblinka, was not to immediately gas prisoners but instead to use them for slave labor until they died or were tranferred. Numbers vary, but more 200,000 people died in the camp during its existence. It’s impossible to say for sure.
Upon liberation, many guards were killed during the “Dachau massacre”. Some were killed by Allied troops seeing the horrors of what lay within the camp.
There are also stories of prisoners being given guns and exacting a final revenge on the camp guards. According to witnesses, some guards were ripped apart by prisoners using only their bare hands.
